Postdoctoral position on the link between mRNA decay and transcriptional modulation near Frankfurt, Germany

Posted on June 2nd,

The Stainier lab is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher with expertise in RNA biology to investigate a form of genetic compensation that we termed transcriptional adaptation.  Briefly, transcriptional adaptation occurs upon mutant mRNA decay, for example due to a premature termination codon.  The decay fragments would in turn modulate the expression of related/adapting genes, leading to varying degrees of phenotypic rescue, in some cases.  We have observed this phenomenon in zebrafish, mouse, C. elegans, and more recently humans.  This is a novel and quickly developing field of research where many open questions remain to be addressed including 1) the nature, possible modification, and localization/trafficking of the decay fragments, and 2) the regulation of related/adapting genes by the decay fragments.  For more detailed information please see our recent publications: (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-019-1064-z; https://www.nature.com/articles/nature14580; https://elifesciences.org/articles/50014; https://www.embopress.org/doi/full/10.1038/s44319-025-00427-3; https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-024-08539-x)

Fully Funded Ph.D. Position in RNA Biology – Québec City, Canada

Posted on May 27th,

A fully funded Ph.D. position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Dmitry Kretov at the Centre de recherche du CHU de Québec – Université Laval in Québec City, Canada, starting in Fall 2025.

Our young lab, launched in January 2025, investigates how RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) and microRNAs regulate gene expression during early embryonic development and cancer progression. This position is part of an NSERC-funded project titled "Development of an in vivo high-throughput screening platform to decipher post-transcriptional regulatory networks," which builds on our newly developed method, RBPscan, a quantitative tool for measuring RNA–protein interactions in vivo (Kretov et al., bioRxiv, 2025).

The selected Ph.D. candidate will apply and further develop this technique to decipher the binding specificities of RBPs involved in the assembly of RNA granules, using diverse biological models such as early zebrafish embryos, cancer cell lines, and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs).

As a newly established lab, we offer close mentorship, a collaborative research culture, and a strong commitment to scientific and professional development. Our group is part of the dynamic Oncology Axis, based in a brand-new, state-of-the-art research center located in the beautiful and historic city of Québec, Canada.

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a Master’s degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, or a related field. Prior experience with wet-lab molecular biology techniques is required. The ideal candidate should be enthusiastic about learning new experimental approaches and exploring the frontiers of post-transcriptional gene regulation.

To apply, please send the following documents to [email protected]:

  • Your curriculum vitae (CV).
  • A motivation letter outlining your interest in the position.
  • Contact information for at least three references.

Fully Funded PhD Student Position in Reproductive Biology

Posted on May 21st,

We are offering a fully funded PhD student position focused on the regulation of male fertility through an interdisciplinary approach. Our current research centers on understanding the molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in the final maturation (capacitation) of sperm within the female reproductive tract, using a bovine model. Traditionally, sperm cells have been considered transcriptionally and translationally inactive. However, our recent studies challenge this dogma. We have shown that sperm contains full-length mRNA, which is actively translated during the capacitation process. Despite this discovery, the molecular mechanisms governing mRNA translation in sperm remain unknown.

The goal of this graduate student position is to reconceptualize translational quiescence in sperm by exploring the molecular basis of translational regulation. The ideal candidate should have a strong background in biochemistry and RNA biology, along with experience in advanced cellular and molecular biological techniques. Knowledge of reproductive biology would be an asset. The selected student will have the unique opportunity to develop expertise in various methodologies, including RNA extraction from sperm, reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), immunoblotting, mass spectrometry-based protein identification, polysome profiling, and ribosome profiling. This research will be conducted in collaboration with the Thakor lab at the University of Lethbridge, Artificial Insemination centers, and human fertility clinics. The successful candidate will have exemplary opportunities for professional skills development and career awareness.
