RNA Society Public Statement on the Proposed OMB Rule Changes

The RNA Society is an international non-profit organization incorporated in the United States and dedicated to advancing RNA research and education. The Society is home to over 2,000 scientists (greater than 50% of whom are affiliated with US institutions) working in academic, government, and industry laboratories to advance fundamental knowledge of RNA biology and to translate this knowledge into groundbreaking technologies and medicines.

Through numerous programs and initiatives, the RNA Society serves to foster vital scientific exchange and peer review, promote professional development and training of the next generation of researchers, and support our community to advance discoveries in RNA science. The expansive rule amendments proposed by the United States Office of Management and Budget (Docket OMB-2026-0034) will have a dramatic negative impact on research in the US and the RNA Society’s ability to support advances in RNA science and education. The OMB amendments:

  • mandate political oversight of research priorities and funding decisions,
  • suppress scientific freedom,
  • restrict collaboration, and
  • place blatant barriers on the open exchange of ideas

– all contradictory to the tenant of the RNA Society and its mission – while also placing limits on researcher engagement in learned organizations and their programs, thus further impeding scientific advancement. The RNA Society strongly opposes these amendments which are foreseeable in having damaging consequences for the advancement of science in the US and beyond.
