The Ning Zhao laboratory at the University of Colorado-Anschutz Medical Campus is recruiting two talented and self-motivated postdoc fellows.

Introduction of the laboratory

The laboratory of Dr. Ning Zhao (https://medschool.cuanschutz.edu/biochemistry/people/primary-faculty/zhao-ning) locates in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics at the University of Colorado-Anschutz Medical Campus in Denver, Colorado. The lab aims to understand how aging and disease-related proteins are regulated in their native intracellular environments. Currently, the lab focuses on studying the translation and folding mechanisms of transmembrane proteins on the endoplasmic reticulum, such as ion channel proteins and cell receptors. We apply diverse approaches in the study, including state-of-art single-molecule tracking as well as traditional biochemistry and biophysics approaches, such as ELISA, western blots, immunofluorescence, immunoprecipitation, circular dichroism, ITC, and DSC. The lab is successful in acquiring external funding and currently is funded by NIH K99/R00.

Job description

1.  Postdoc position 1: Tools development for live-cell imaging.

The candidate for this position is expected to have extensive experience in designing and engineering proteins. Successful research experience in antibody engineering (scFvs or nanobodies) is a plus. The main focus of this position is developing live cell imaging tools for studying protein translation and folding. The candidate is expected to work independently, including but not limited to designing and performing experiments, analyzing data, writing and publishing papers, assisting in grant applications, and mentoring junior scientists in the lab.

Qualifications

  • PhD in biochemistry, engineering, biophysics, or biology-related field
  • Experience in protein design and engineering
  • Experience in mammalian cell culturing and fluorescence microscopy
  • Strong record of peer-reviewed publications
  • Fluent in English

2. Postdoc position 2:  Studying protein translation and folding

The main focus of this position is studying translation and folding mechanisms using the state-of-art single-molecule tracking approach. Candidates with hands-on single-molecule tracking experience are preferred. The candidate is expected to work independently, including but not limited to generating imaging cell lines, designing and performing imaging experiments, analyzing imaging data, writing and publishing papers, assisting in grant applications, and mentoring junior scientists in the lab.

Qualifications

  • PhD in biophysics, biochemistry, or biology-related field
  • Experience in single-molecule tracking is preferred
  • Experience in imaging analysis using ImageJ and Python is preferred
  • Experience in confocal or TIRF fluorescence microscope
  • Experience in mammalian cell culturing and generating stable cell lines
  • Strong record of peer-reviewed publications
  • Fluent in English
