The Steckelberg Lab (www.steckelberglab.org) in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics at Columbia University seeks a skilled and enthusiastic postdoctoral researcher to join our team. Our lab is focused on mechanistic, structure-level understanding of host-virus interactions, with a particular interest in the role of viral RNA structures and the interconnection between viral life cycle and RNA metabolism. Current projects include the analysis of RNA turnover and RNA quality control pathways during infection with RNA viruses of the CoronaviridaeFlaviviridae, and Tombusviridae families.

The successful candidate will join the vibrant and collaborative research community of Columbia University Irving Medical Center and have access to state-of-the-art structural biology and biophysical equipment.

What we offer:

  • Working as part of a highly collaborative, enthusiastic, and diverse team.
  • Supportive mentoring tailored to individual goals.
  • A vibrant scientific community with monthly local meetings (RNA club, Virology club).
  • Annual attendance at national and international research conferences.
  • Competitive salary. Benefits include relocation assistance, subsidized housing and up to 3 months paid parental leave.

Minimum qualifications:

Ph.D. or equivalent degree in biochemistry, biophysics, structural biology, molecular biology, virology, microbiology, or related field.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Strong background in biochemistry, structural biology, RNA biology, and/or virology is preferred.
  • Candidates with prior knowledge in RNA virology are particularly encouraged to apply.
  • Structural biology (CryoEM, X-ray crystallography), bioinformatic experience (Python, R, MATLAB) and/or experience with high-throughput genome editing are a plus.
  • The successful candidate will have a strong scientific record, excellent communication skills, be self-motivated, and enjoy working independently and as part of a team.
