Postdoctoral fellow position on mechanistic study of viral mRNA capping enzymes

The Research Department at New England Biolabs (NEB) is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship focused on mechanistic study of viral mRNA capping enzymes. Viral mRNA capping enzymes are complex multifunctional proteins possessing three to four enzyme activities each essential for mRNA capping. Although they are one of the essential enzymes used in manufacturing therapeutic mRNA such as the COVID mRNA vaccines, some important mechanistic details remain unanswered. The successful candidate will engage in research on mechanistic properties of RNA capping enzymes using cutting edge research and bioinformatics tools with solid support from the NEB research community. The candidate will enjoy a highly collaborative and intellectually open environment where oral communication of ideas and publication of results are expected.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Perform biochemical research on viral mRNA capping enzymes and related RNA 5’ modifying enzymes
  • Develop and implement enzyme assays to answer mechanistic questions.
  • Publish and present novel research findings in academic journals and conferences.
  • Assist in the supervision of graduate and undergraduate interns.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • Recent Ph.D. in biochemistry or related disciplines. 
  • Solid track record in enzyme kinetics and enzyme-ligand interactions research
  • Experience in assay development and implementation.
  • Fluency in interpretation of atomic structures and formulating testable hypotheses.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to effectively handle multiple projects.
  • Demonstrated scientific communication in both formal and informal settings.
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong work ethic, emphasizing both efficiency and quality of work.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to thrive in a team environment.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Publication of original scientific research in high-quality journals.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience:

  • Proficiency with common bioinformatics tools.
  • High-throughput experimentation design and execution.
  • Recombinant protein purification techniques.
  • Molecular cloning techniques.
