The Research Group of Prof. Dr. Katja Sträßer, Institute of Biochemistry, Justus Liebig University, Giessen, Germany, invites applications for the position as a PhD. student / predoctoral fellow.

The position is available from June 1st, 2023 until May 31st, 2028. The salary of the position is determined by payment group E 13 according to the collective labor agreement of the State of Hessia (TV-H).

We are looking for a highly motivated Ph.D. student to elucidate the mechanisms and regulation of nuclear mRNP biogenesis starting June 2023 or later.

Already during transcription by RNA polymerase II, the synthesized mRNA is bound by nuclear RNA-binding proteins and packaged into a messenger ribonucleoprotein particle (mRNP). This process is of prime importance for correct gene expression as it is necessary for stability and nuclear export of the mRNA and even determines cytoplasmic steps such as translation and mRNA degradation. In addition, nuclear mRNA export is regulated under stress conditions including diseases conditions, and misregulation of this process causes diverse diseases. However, the mechanism of mRNA packaging and its regulation are still not understood, and, thus, will be elucidated in this project.

We use a wide range of biochemical, molecular and cell biological, genetic and computational techniques and offer an international, highly motivating and interactive environment, state of the art facilities and optimal support to develop strong research skills and an academic profile.

Your tasks at a glance

Your qualifications and competences
• Completed Master‘s or equivalent university degree in biology, biochemistry or a similar subject with a focus on molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry and/or genetics
