The University of Colorado School of Medicine invites nominations and applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics.

The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics has 22 primary faculty located on the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora. The department has an international reputation for research excellence,  state-of-the art resources, a highly interactive and collaborative culture, and outstanding training programs.

The Department had an annual budget of $17.5 million, approximately 45 percent of which is derived from competitive extramural grants. Research in the department is built on a foundation of innovation and excellence, with strength in RNA biology, structural biology and biochemistry, cancer research, genomics, yeast genetics and molecular biology.   Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics faculty participate extensively in medical and graduate student education and postdoctoral training.

The University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, one of four campuses in the University of Colorado System, is the major academic medical center in the Rocky Mountain region, and one of the largest and most comprehensive biomedical research and clinical care centers in the western United States. The Anschutz Medical Campus is home to a NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center as well as UCHealth’s University of Colorado Hospital, Children’s Hospital Colorado, and a new Veterans Affairs Hospital.

The CU School of Medicine has distinctive and highly productive research programs fueled by more than $421 million per year in grants, including more than $221 million from National Institutes of Health and other federal agencies. The School’s total annual clinical and research revenue exceeds $1.5 billion per year. The School of Medicine recently identified five focus areas for research investment, with one—RNA Biology—having extensive involvement of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics faculty. In addition, the School has invested significant resources to establish a state-of-the-art core facility for structural biology that includes cryo-electron microscopy, x-ray crystallography, NMR, and proteomics and metabolomics. that is managed by the Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics Department.

The Chair reports to the Dean of the School of Medicine and serves on the School of Medicine’s Executive Committee. We are seeking a Chair with a strong track record of innovative scientific discovery who will maintain a well-funded research program.  She/he will have leadership skills commensurate with a world class research-focused department. The Chair will be responsible for leading growth in the Department’s research portfolio and for promoting collaborative research throughout the School of Medicine and the Anschutz Medical Campus. The Chair is expected to maintain and enhance diversity amongst the Department’s faculty, trainees and staff, enhance the Department’s educational programs, and assure transparency in the Department’s administration, management, budgetary planning and implementation.
