Scientist I, Molecular Biology/Platform Development Skyhawk Therapeutics

Scientist I, Molecular Biology/Platform Development

Skyhawk Therapeutics is seeking a Scientist to join the talented, growing startup team in Waltham, MA.

Skyhawk is committed to discovering, developing and commercializing small molecule therapeutics that correct RNA splicing. We use our novel SkySTARTM platform (Skyhawk Small molecule Therapeutics for Alternative splicing of RNA) to develop drug candidates directed to targets for some of the world’s most intractable diseases including cancer, neurological conditions, and other “undruggable” targets against a wide range of conditions.

Position Overview

The successful candidate will be part of an interdisciplinary research team, working on an interface from molecular biology to biophysical and biochemical methods to help support the growth of the Skyhawk Platform to develop small molecules targeting RNA. They will develop molecular biology assays and tools to elucidate a novel mechanism of actions of drugs, develop novel screening tools, and work with NGS techniques. The work of the successful candidate will aid multiple drug research projects and teams; and collaborate with contract research organizations to develop additional tools.

Role and Responsibilities (include, but are not limited to):

  • Design and develop molecular biology assays and tools to characterize molecular interactions between RNA and proteins/small molecules. Establish workflows, SOPs and guidelines
  • Design and create minigene constructs and mutagenesis to aid target validation and hit-to-lead studies
  • Design and develop CRISPR-based assays
  • Prepare next-generation sequence (NGS) library and run NGS sequencer
  • Clearly and efficiently communicate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate activities with programs
  • Review technical publications, articles and abstracts in the fields of RNA biochemistry, and molecular biology
  • Participate in project lab, team or company meetings, and scientific discussions
  • Summarize/report data and generate presentation materials

Education/Skills/Experience Requirements:

  • PhD in Molecular Biology/Biochemistry and 1-2 years of practical experience in RNA biology with an understanding of drug discovery
  • Deep knowledge in biochemical and molecular biology techniques
  • Hands-on experience in expression and purification of proteins, functional analyses of protein/small molecule-RNA complexes, and site-directed mutagenesis
  • Demonstrated contributions in identification and validation of target and drug binding sites
  • Proven experience in working independently as well as in a team environment
  • Innovation in research/methodology, and excellent command of the research literature and databases
  • Demonstrated track record of scientific publications related to RNA processing
  • Proficiency in MS Office package and GraphPad prism
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
  • Excellent interpersonal and team skills; track record of success working collaboratively across disciplines
  • Ability to think critically, make timely decisions, and manage deadlines and priorities
  • Flexible, efficient and able to work independently with a problem-solving attitude in a fast-paced small company environment
